“Strain Induced Coupling Between Ferromagnetism and Ferroelectricity in Multiferroic LuMnO3 Thin Films”

Multiferoic materials feature the co-existence of several ferroic properties: ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, and/or ferroelasticity. Their cross-coupling makes this class of materials interesting for new spintronic devices. Utilizing neutron diffraction and polarized neutron reflectometry we studied thin films of orthorhombic LuMnO3, a material which is known to exhibit magnetically-induced ferroelectricity with an E-type antiferromagnetic groundstate. In single crystalline like thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on YAlO3 substrates, we identify coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders. The ferromagnetism is located in a layer close to the substrate-film interface and extends over about 10 nm with a large magnetic moment of ≈ 1B per Mn at the interface. We further show that the strain-induced ferromagnetism and the antiferromagnetic order are coupled via an exchange field, therefore demonstrating strained rare-earth managanite thin films as promising candidate systems for new multifunctional devices.
