Youth are at high risk for exposure to multiple forms of violence, and it has been well established that victimization is associated with significant mental and physical health consequences. Community and school social workers, school administrators and staff are on the frontlines. This symposium is designed to provide an overview of the scope of the problem and emerging knowledge needed for change and prevention. In the last two decades, the field of violence prevention has seen a significant paradigm shift, moving from the idea that violence is unavoidable to the understanding that violence can be prevented. In part, this evolution reflects a better understanding of the interconnections between various types of exposure to violence (e.g., community violence exposure, school, cyberbullying), as well as the contextual factors (e.g., school climate, community factors) that increase or decrease the risk of exposure. Preventing violence requires knowledge, policies and skills that cut across disciplines and contexts. Grounded in this perspective, this symposium will bring together scholars, as well as mental health and school practitioners, to share insights into new knowledge and promising policies and programs in violence prevention. By drawing on expertise of national and regional experts in child welfare, social work and schools, as well as state and local policymakers, advocates and practitioners, we intend to foster a better understanding of how communities and schools can work together to reduce the incidence and consequences of youth exposure to violence.
