The focus of the course is to understand the ways in which Mumbai has been part of historical and contemporary global economic, cultural, and political processes and the ways in which these processes are gendered and impact the daily lives of women and men in Mumbai. From call center workers to IT professionals, from new malls and changing patterns of consumption to Bollywood films, and movements for housing rights and rights to the city, we will study how actors in Mumbai are both influenced by and in turn shape these global processes. This program is geared towards students in Sociology, India Studies, Asian and Asian American Studies as well as in interdisciplinary programs focusing on globalization, urban studies, WGSS and human rights.Students will receive 3 credits for Soc. 3933/AASI 3933.
