Philosophy Club Speaker: Neil Sinhababu

Tuesday, September 27, 2016
6:00pm – 8:00pm

Storrs Campus
Austin 434

Neil Sinhababu will be giving a talk titled "Humean Nature" on Tuesday September 27th, 6pm. The talk will be in Austin 434.

Abstract: I defend the Humean theory of motivation, according to which desire drives all moral judgment and practical reasoning. First I lay out the significance of the Humean theory for moral philosophy. Then I describe how desire motivates action, causes pleasant and unpleasant feelings, directs our attention, and is intensified by vivid representations of things we associate with its objects. I use these properties of desire to explain how we recognize options in practical reasoning, how we make moral judgments, and the nature of the self.
