Title: A neural basis for sex differences in fear expression

Abstract: Pavlovian fear conditioning and extinction in rodents is a common tool for probing the circuits and mechanisms that are affected in PTSD, which is more prevalent in women. However, most conditioning and extinction research to date has been done in male animals. We recently found that enhanced extinction in females, but not males, was predicted by expression of an active, escape-like response (“darting”) during fear conditioning. Darting was accompanied by distinct patterns of activity in the prefrontal cortex and periaqueductal gray, possibly identifying a novel circuit for a sex-specific adaptive behaviors.
