The Dialectic of the Holy with Robert Meditz

Wednesday, September 13, 2017
3:00pm – 5:00pm

Storrs Campus
Library, Class of 1947 Room

Robert Meditz will give a lecture on his book titled The Dialectic of the Holy: Paul Tillich’s Idea of Judaism Within the History of Religion. Paul Tillich is considered one of the most influential theologians of our time. Even though he was a Protestant, Tillich criticized Anti-Semitism and encouraged the support of Jews and Judaism in Germany in the early 1930’s. Due to these ideals, Tillich chose to emigrate from Germany before World War II broke out. However, Tillich’s thoughts on the subject of Judaism were not seen as a highlight of his outstanding career. In this lecture Meditz will show that Tillich’s support of Judaism and the idea of continuity between Judaism and Christianity were a lesser known, but highly important subject in Tillich’s work.
