What the Day Owes to the Night

French-based Compagnie Hervé Koubi delivers a highly physical, stunningly fluid performance in What the Day Owes to the Night. The 12 Algerian and West African male dancers combine urban and contemporary dance movements with capoeira, hip hop and martial arts, defying gravity with jaw-dropping backflips and head spins. Created by one of Europe's most distinctive choreographers, French-Algerian choreographer Hervé Koubi, the piece was inspired by his father's deathbed revelation that their family originated in Algeria, rather than in France as Koubi had believed. Danced to an eclectic musical score including Johann Sebastian Bach, Hamza El Din, the Kronos Quartet and traditional Sufi music, this spellbinding work explores the artist's newfound roots with transcending emotional intensity.

“A stunning fusion of acrobatics, gymnastics, b-boying, modern dance and ballet. Add traditional Sufi music, haze and atmospheric lighting, and what Koubi has created looks deceptively like an ancient desert ritual.” – The Washington Post
