This program will explore the biology and ecology of Fungi and the role they play in gardening, forest health, the importance of mycorrhizae, and nutrient cycling. Students will learn identification skills, common edible and poisonous mushrooms of Connecticut and a hands-on experience with wild mushrooms. For this program students are encouraged to bring wild mushrooms to this class that they have collected beforehand for examination and identification. We will spend some time learning what features need to be observed for successful identification. *note- students who bring in wild mushrooms for identification are encouraged to carefully bring in the WHOLE mushroom, carefully extracted from the ground or tree, and placed in a brown paper bag. Do not mix different kinds, keep each one separate.
