UConn Opera is proud to present Benjamin Britten's rollicking comedic opera Albert Herring.
Music - Benjamin Britten
Libretto - Eric Crozier
Conductor - Brett Hodgdon
Director - Michelle Hendrick
based on Le Rosier de Madame Husson by Guy de Maupassant
Led by the imperious Lady Billow, the busybodies of the Loxford May Day committee cannot find a virtuous female to crown as May Queen. To teach the girls a lesson, they name the shy and virginal, Albert Herring, as May King. Following an extravagant crowning ceremony, at which Albert gets tipsy on rum-spiked lemonade, Albert gains the courage to discover what the world outside his mama’s grocer shop has to offer, much to the shock and horror of the proper townsfolk! Full of delightfully wicked, deftly drawn characters, Britten’s chamber opera sparkles with freshness, color and limitless charm.
