"Texts and Textiles: Manuscript Fragments in Medieval Dresses"

UCONN Medieval Studies is delighted to welcome Henrike Laehnemann of Newcastle University as our Charles A. Owen., Jr, Visiting Professor of Medieval Studies for fall 2014. In January Professor Laehnemann will take up the Chair of Medieval German Language and Literature at the University of Oxford--as the first woman to do so in the 150 years of history of Modern Languages at Oxford.

As an introduction to the course on her own research that she will offer in the month of September, "The Nun's Manuscripts" (for description see http://www.medievalstudies.ucoprofs.html), Professor Laehnemann will offer a public lecture on the recent discovery of manuscript fragments sewn into medieval dresses. This promises to be a tour-de-force of medieval media studies, as Laehnemann demonstrates how manuscripts were repurposed in dresses hand-sewn to adorn sculptures on feast days, and explores the implications of this activity for our understanding of late medieval devotional culture.

All are invited to attend.
