Opening Reception - Hooked Fiber Art, 10/25, 1-4 p.m.

This show combines the work of 18 artists from the U.S. and Canada, who create contemporary hooked fiber art. An opening reception will be held on October 25 when awards will be presented by Lee Kogan, Curator Emerita, American Folk Art Museum, NYC. There will also be artist talks and book signs by some of the participating artists.

“These artists, all affiliated with Newtown Hooked Art Shows, exemplify a 21st century approach to working within the traditional medium of rug hooking. The technique itself is used in highly personal and idiosyncratic ways as a means of individual artistic expression, and of broadening the perception of hooked fiber art today.”

“Artists in this exhibit have created works that greatly expand the boundaries of the medium through their use of vibrant color and unusual materials such as paper and plastic, sculptural forms, and an emphasis on creativity rather than practicality. Yet in many of these works there are elements of and references to community and daily life, so important to their ancestral rug makers. In these contemporary works, from the use of repurposed plastic, to social commentary, to the beauty found in nature, and to pure artistic inspiration, viewers will find many surprises.”
