12:00pm – 1:00pm

UConn Health
Keller Auditorium

Title: Don’t “beat me up” because I care for the “locked-up” Learning objectives:  The inmate patients are serving time for their crime; you still have to maintain professionalism in caring for them.  Inmate patients are people too—they are not the best decision-makers; they have families; they have emotions, fears, and frustrations.  Unfortunate circumstances can lead to bad outcomes and incarceration (accidentally hitting someone with a car, etc)—could happen to anybody.  It can be scary to start working on the DOC ward, even intimidating, but in the end, it is just like every other unit.  Inmate patients can refuse treatments, just like other patients.  When staff asks for help on the DOC unit, it often comes late or it does not come at all; it is unfair to be stigmatized by our colleagues in the same way our patients are stigmatized by society.  Staff choose to work on the DOC unit--- we did not get demoted! Nice people work on the DOC unit, just like on other units. Lunch Info: Lunches are ready at 11:30 a.m. in Keller Lobby. If you would like a lunch, RSVP by calling x7692 or e-mailing no later than October 15 (if you would like a lunch). Lunch is available for the first 100 registrants. For UCONN EMPLOYEES ONLY Badge required for admittance.
