"Nonlinear Time Series Analysis and Kepler Space Telescope Asterosiesmic Data: A Timely and Mutually Productive Merger"

It is neither unheard of nor surprising that whole methodologies develop in leaps and bounds when real-world problems that need them appear (surface, are formulated) and more often than not early promise goes unrealized until such a time. Nonlinear time series analysis is uniquely applicable to stellar data where the measured one- dimensional variable (power, brightness, luminosity) does couple all the degrees of freedom and for which, often no a priori information on the complex source dynamics exists. However, until recently due to the diurnal cycle and the vagaries of the weather, astronomical data series had large gaps and were too short and of limited dynamic range to lend themselves to nonlinear time series analysis. Enter space telescopes: the European Corot and NASA’s Kepler. The latter though dedicated to the search for earth-like extrasolar planets, observed over 150,000 stars continuously (with a 92.5% duty cycle). Using the transit method it was crucial that variable stars be identified and characterized. The data for over 2000 stars were made available through KASC, the Kepler Space Telescope Asteroseismic Consortium, to the stellar community. We report on the deeper understanding gained of the methodology and results of the nonlinear time series analysis of Kepler stellar data. This includes noise reduction by a factor of 100,000, prediction of the shape of the power spectrum using the more inclusive counterpart of the autocorrelation function, average mutual information, AMI, and a novel straightforward method to ascertain whether the sampling time is short enough to allow access to all the dynamics at the source.
