Sign Problem of Functional Methods and Lefschetz-Thimble Path Integral

Finite-density QCD gets a lot of interest in the context of beam-energy scan of QGP and of interior structures of neutron stars. Its theoretical study based on numerical Lattice QCD suffers from the sign problem, and thus many effective models have been studied using various nonperturbative/perturbative techniques of field theories. In this talk, I would like to reconsider about those techniques for theories with the sign problem, because the sign problem of functional methods is often less appreciated compared with that of Monte Carlo integral. I will explain what the sign problem of functional methods, and provide the concrete procedures to solve that problem using Lefschetz-thimble method. I will also demonstrate how it works in a toy example of Polyakov-loop effective model for heavy-dense QCD.
