Biodiversity: The Spice of Life

Michael Willig | 2016 Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

The earth’s biodiversity is a product of millions of years of evolution, provides an array of goods and services that is vital to human prosperity, and is critically endangered as a consequence of anthropogenic activities. This talk, intended for non-experts, will characterize various dimensions of biodiversity, explore how it varies along spatial and environmental gradients, and consider how climate change and land use change may produce indelible impacts on the abundance and distribution of species. Illustrative examples, derived from tropical research, will pepper the presentation to provide insights into life’s complexities.
