Environmental & Climate Justice

Tuesday, April 11, 2017
2:00pm – 3:30pm

Hartford Campus
Room 126, Undergraduate Building

Jacqueline Patterson is the Director of the NAACP Environmental & Climate Justice Program. Her presentation describes how climate change and environmental issues disproportionately impact poor people and communities of color, while also illustrating how these areas intersect with systemic and institutional oppression. Climate Justice is an area that, as terribly pressing and impactful as it is for already vulnerable populations, is very rarely addressed in social work education, or most education for that matter. Social Work's commitment to social justice and to improving conditions for vulnerable populations is incomplete without acknowledging all of the stark realities on this earth, their intersections, and all dimensions of systemic oppression. The purpose of this event is to enrich students, staff, and the public at the SSW, to educate about an perspective that is becoming increasingly crucial to understand, as the effects of climate change will only continue to increase. Food will be provided. All are welcome!
