Archaeology at the Oliver Ellsworth – Francis Stiles Site

Thursday, May 10, 2018
6:45pm – 8:00pm

Oliver Ellsworth House, Matthies Hall, 778 Palisado Ave, Windsor, CT 06095

State Archaeologist Brian Jones will discuss the history of archaeological work conducted at the Oliver Ellsworth homestead. Excavation at the site was first undertaken by UConn in 1990. In 2017, the Office of State Archaeology supervised a ground penetrating radar survey of the site and spent two weeks conducting public archaeology programs. These studies have pinpointed the buried and long-forgotten remains of a large house that appears to have been demolished prior to 1740. This house is believed to be the original home constructed by Francis Stiles as early as 1635 and later occupied by the ancestors of Oliver Ellsworth. Dr. Jones will discuss the importance of the new finds and relate them to other recently discovered 17th century sites in Windsor, Wethersfield and Glastonbury.
