This lecture will give an overview of the history of genetic engineering of foods with an emphasis on the safety aspects of the technology. Specific examples of foods that have been genetically engineered will be given and the regulatory climate in the United States and Europe will be examined. The talk will include a discussion of the new mandatory labeling law that went into effect this year.
