Wednesday, October 10, 2018
2:30pm – 4:00pm

Storrs Campus
Austin 217

October 10, 2:30-4:00pm, Stern Lounge for a talk by Debapriya Sarkar titled ‘“endlesse error’: The Literary Methods of Early Modern Science.” Speculative habits of thought—such as hypothesis, conjecture, prophecy, and prediction—were at the heart of early modern poetics. Sarkar calls these ways of thinking “possible knowledge,” using them to show how poesie helped to re-imagine epistemic uncertainty at the time of the so-called Scientific Revolution. Uncovering the importance of creative modes to innovations in scientific thought, she shows how the imaginative techniques that characterize major genres of literary writing undergirded natural inquiry in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Sarkar works on early modern literature and culture, poetry and poetics, the history and philosophy of science, and environmental humanities.
