AAASI Talk: "Change Without Change: Dao and Causation"

Tuesday, October 9, 2018
3:00pm – 4:00pm

Storrs Campus
Babbidge Library, Class of 1947 Room

Talk by Joshua Brown (Theology, Mount St. Mary's University)

In early Daoist texts, the Dao ("Way") is often depicted as the principle of change, on the basis that it is change and changing in and of itself. From this, many scholars conclude the Dao is a fully immanent or natural concept, i.e., it stands within and neither above nor behind the natural order. The goal of presentation is to draw attention to aspects of early Daoist texts that challenge the standard interpretation. Specifically, the presentation will focus on analyzing how the Dao is not merely change or changing, but also unchanged and unchanging in Daoist texts.
