Interests in Multiferroics and Other Functional Materials

A multiferroic combines any two or more of the primary ferroic orderings (ferroelectric, ferroeleastic, ferromagnetic) in the same phase, such as the ferroelectric-ferroelastics that form the basis of piezoelectric transducers. The term “magnetoelectric multiferroics” is used for materials that combine ferroelectricity with ferromagnetism or, more loosely, with any kind of magnetism. One of the most appealing aspects of such multiferroics is their so-called magnetoelectric coupling. Even though first experimental observation of magnetoelectric multiferroicity was done in 1960s; today’s renaissance of these material was enabled by a combination of theoretical and experimental factors. This includes the availability of modern synthesis techniques—particularly thin-film allowing good control over crystallinity and chemical stoichiometry in samples. In my talk, I will discuss some of the basic properties of ferroics/multiferroics and my group’s research work on a few other function and multifunctional materials.
