"The UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants, National Policies, and Forestland Rights of India’s Adivasis"

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP) is the most recently enacted UN human rights declaration. The economic and social rights enshrined within UNDROP are crucial for the achievement of the UN-SDGs and India serves as a good test case because 1) it enacted a domestic law focused on the rights that UNDROP is focused on; 2) because India also has fairly robust tradition of social activism on the subject. This work draws on a longstanding interdisciplinary research program on the economic and social rights of India’s indigenous Adivasis, who are engaged in farm and forest-based subsistence livelihoods. The collective engagement that the group of collaborators that this article brings together have had with the topic for nearly a quarter century offers an insightful longitudinal view of the policy struggles, their apparent resolutions, and the barriers that came up in implementing the relevant laws.
