Our speaker, Jonathan Katz, is a journalist and the author of The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster (Macmillan, 2015), a searing account of the 2010 earthquake and its tragic aftermath. A regular contributor to the New York Times and other publications, he was a 2019 fellow at New America and formerly directed the Media & Journalism Institute at Duke University’s John Hope Franklin Institute. He will be speaking about Major General Smedley Butler, a key figure in the book is finishing on U.S. power in the greater Caribbean and beyond, entitled Gangsters of Empire.
